This was the fourth edition of TEDx Laçador in Porto Alegre, an event which is organized independently but follows the guidelines, format and content standards endorsed by TED.
What is TED?
TED is a non-profit organization dedicated to spreading ideas that deserve to be heard. After starting as a four day conference in California 25 years ago, TED has grown to support transformative ideas that are spread around the world through a number of initiatives. The annual TED conference invites leaders, thinkers and decision makers from all over the world to give 18 minute speeches. Afterwards, the lectures are made available at no cost on the website TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and Gordon Brown, ex-Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. The annual TED conference is held every spring in Long Beach, California, along with the simultaneous transmission of TEDActive in Palm Springs. An annual TEDGlobal conference takes place in Edinburgh, Scotland every summer.
What is TEDx?
TEDx is an independently organized local events program, which invites people to be a part of the TED experience. At a TEDx event, live and video lectures are combined to create profound discussions and connections in a small group setting. These local events are called TEDx events. The “x” means that it is an independently organized event. The TED Conference provides general guidelines for the TEDx programs, but TEDx events are run individually (though they are subject to certain rules and regulations).
